Sarma is a traditional Arbëreshë dish that consists of delicious stuffed cabbage rolls with rice and meat. This recipe has been passed down through generations and is a beloved dish in Albanian cuisine.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 cup of rice
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup of chopped parsley
- 1 teaspoon of paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups of tomato sauce
- 2 cups of beef broth
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.
- In a bowl, mix the rice, ground beef, onion, garlic, parsley, paprika, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Place a spoonful of the meat and rice mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
- Place the cabbage rolls in a large pot, seam side down. Pour the tomato sauce and beef broth over the rolls.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
