Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes, or until softened. Remove and set aside to cool.
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
- Place the stuffed cabbage rolls in a large pot, seam side down.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and vegetable oil. Pour the mixture over the cabbage rolls in the pot.
- Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for 2 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Serve the sarma hot, with a dollop of sour cream if desired.
