Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes, or until softened. Remove and set aside to cool.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
  4. Place the stuffed cabbage rolls in a large pot, seam side down.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix together the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and vegetable oil. Pour the mixture over the cabbage rolls in the pot.
  6. Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for 2 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are tender and the filling is cooked through.
  7. Serve the sarma hot, with a dollop of sour cream if desired.
