Sasam Prawns (tasty Tamarind Prawns)
Sasam Prawns, also known as Tasty Tamarind Prawns, is a popular dish from Mangalurean Cuisine. This dish features succulent prawns cooked in a tangy and flavorful tamarind-based gravy, making it a delightful seafood delicacy.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 2-3 tbsp tamarind paste
- 4-5 dried red chilies
- 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tbsp oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-inch ginger, finely chopped
- Coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- In a blender, grind the grated coconut, tamarind paste, dried red chilies, fenugreek seeds, turmeric powder, and salt to a smooth paste by adding a little water.
- Heat oil in a pan and sauté the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger until they turn golden brown.
- Add the ground masala paste to the pan and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the cleaned prawns to the pan and mix well with the masala. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are cooked through.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
