Sauerbraten Burger With Red Cabbage Slaw

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup pickling spice
  • 4 burger buns
  • 2 cups shredded red cabbage
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and chopped onion. Form into 4 burger patties.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the red wine vinegar, water, brown sugar, and pickling spice. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Pour the cooled marinade over the burger patties, cover, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Preheat a grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the marinated burger patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the shredded red cabbage, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper to make the slaw.
  6. Toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster oven.
  7. Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun and topping with a generous portion of red cabbage slaw.
