Savory Meat Pie (empanada)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened.
  4. Stir in the paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out each dough ball into a circle. Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.
  6. Place the empanadas on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
