Savory Meat Pie (empanada)
Savory Meat Pie, also known as Empanada, is a popular dish in Guamanian cuisine. It features a flavorful meat filling encased in a crispy pastry shell, making it a delicious and satisfying meal or snack.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened.
- Stir in the paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out each dough ball into a circle. Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.
- Place the empanadas on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
