Savory Pastries (curaçaoan Pastechi)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the cold water, tossing with a fork until a dough forms. Shape into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, and cook until softened. Add the ground beef, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Using a round cutter, cut out circles of dough.
  5. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges with a fork to seal.
  6. Place the pastries on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
