Saxon Beef Goulash (Marhapörkölt)
Marhapörkölt, also known as Saxon Beef Goulash, is a traditional dish from Transylvanian Saxon cuisine. This hearty stew is packed with rich flavors and is perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef, cut into cubes
- 2 onions, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tbsp sweet paprika
- 1 tsp caraway seeds
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 2 red bell peppers, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Add the beef cubes and brown on all sides.
- Stir in the sweet paprika and caraway seeds, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Add the diced tomatoes, sliced bell peppers, and beef broth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1.5-2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed, and serve hot.
