Káposztás Tészta, also known as Saxon Cabbage and Noodle Casserole, is a traditional dish from Transylvanian Saxon cuisine. This hearty and comforting casserole is made with simple ingredients and is perfect for a cozy family meal.

Saxon Cabbage and Noodle Casserole (Káposztás Tészta)

Ingredients

  • 1 head of cabbage, shredded
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 8 oz wide egg noodles
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, boil water and cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
  3. Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Grease a casserole dish and layer half of the cooked noodles on the bottom.
  6. Spread half of the cabbage mixture over the noodles, then top with half of the sour cream and half of the shredded cheese.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining noodles, cabbage, sour cream, and cheese.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
