Saxon Cabbage and Noodle Casserole (Káposztás Tészta)
Káposztás Tészta, also known as Saxon Cabbage and Noodle Casserole, is a traditional dish from Transylvanian Saxon cuisine. This hearty and comforting casserole is made with simple ingredients and is perfect for a cozy family meal.
Ingredients
- 1 head of cabbage, shredded
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 8 oz wide egg noodles
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, boil water and cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
- Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a casserole dish and layer half of the cooked noodles on the bottom.
- Spread half of the cabbage mixture over the noodles, then top with half of the sour cream and half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining noodles, cabbage, sour cream, and cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
