Saxon Cherry Strudel (Cseresznyés Rétes)
Cseresznyés Rétes, also known as Saxon Cherry Strudel, is a traditional dessert from Transylvanian Saxon cuisine. This delicious pastry is filled with sweet cherries and wrapped in layers of thin, flaky dough.
Ingredients
- 2 cups pitted cherries
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 8 sheets phyllo dough
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the pitted cherries, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon.
- Place one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of bread crumbs over the buttered phyllo dough.
- Repeat the process with the remaining phyllo sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
- Spread the cherry mixture along one edge of the phyllo stack, leaving a border around the edges.
- Roll the phyllo stack with the cherry filling into a strudel, tucking in the edges as you roll.
- Place the strudel on a baking sheet and brush the top with melted butter.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the strudel is golden brown.
- Let the strudel cool for a few minutes, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
