Saxon Plum Compote (Sächsisches Zwetschgenkompott)
Sächsisches Zwetschgenkompott, or Saxon Plum Compote, is a traditional dessert from the Saxon region of Germany. This sweet and tangy compote is made with ripe plums, sugar, and warm spices, and it is often served with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
- 1 kg ripe plums, pitted and halved
- 200g granulated sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the plums, sugar, cinnamon stick, vanilla bean and seeds, and water.
- Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the compote cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the plums are soft and the liquid has thickened slightly.
- Remove the cinnamon stick and vanilla bean from the compote.
- Let the compote cool slightly before serving.
