Szilvalekvár, or Saxon Plum Jam, is a traditional Transylvanian Saxon recipe that has been passed down through generations. This sweet and tangy jam is perfect for spreading on toast, filling pastries, or adding a dollop to your morning yogurt.

Saxon Plum Jam (Szilvalekvár)

Ingredients

  • 2 kg ripe plums, pitted and chopped
  • 500g granulated sugar
  • 1 lemon, juiced

Instructions

  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, combine the chopped plums, sugar, and lemon juice.
  2. Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the jam simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  4. Once the jam has reached the desired consistency, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly.
  5. Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars and seal them tightly. Allow the jam to cool completely before storing.
