Sayadiah is a traditional Omani spiced fish curry that is rich in flavor and a staple in Omani cuisine. This dish is a perfect combination of spices, fish, and rice, creating a hearty and satisfying meal.

Sayadiah (omani Spiced Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 cups fish or vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Season the fish fillets with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened.
  3. Add the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  5. Add the basmati rice and stir to coat with the spices and vegetables.
  6. Pour in the fish or vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
  7. Gently place the seasoned fish fillets on top of the rice mixture. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the fish is flaky.
  8. Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork and gently mix in the fish.
  9. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  10. Serve the Sayadiah hot, garnished with fresh cilantro or parsley.
