Sayadiah (omani Spiced Fish Curry)
Sayadiah is a traditional Omani spiced fish curry that is rich in flavor and a staple in Omani cuisine. This dish is a perfect combination of spices, fish, and rice, creating a hearty and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tomatoes, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 2 cups fish or vegetable broth
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Season the fish fillets with salt and pepper.
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened.
- Add the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
- Add the basmati rice and stir to coat with the spices and vegetables.
- Pour in the fish or vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
- Gently place the seasoned fish fillets on top of the rice mixture. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the fish is flaky.
- Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork and gently mix in the fish.
- Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
- Serve the Sayadiah hot, garnished with fresh cilantro or parsley.
