Sel Roti

Sel roti is a traditional Nepali homemade, sweet, ring-shaped rice bread/doughnut. It is mostly prepared during Dashain and Tihar, the greatest Hindu festivals in Nepal.

Sel Roti

Ingredients

  • 3 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 ripe banana, mashed
  • 1 cup water
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the rice flour, sugar, cardamom powder, and baking powder.
  2. Add the mashed banana and water to the dry ingredients and mix until a smooth batter is formed.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Pour the batter into a funnel or piping bag and carefully pipe it into the hot oil in a circular motion to form a ring shape.
  5. Fry the sel roti until golden brown on both sides, then remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve the sel roti warm with tea or yogurt.
