Serbian Spinach Pie (Pita sa Spanaćem)
Pita sa Spanaćem, or Serbian Spinach Pie, is a delicious savory pie that is a staple in Serbian cuisine. This flaky pastry filled with flavorful spinach and cheese is perfect for any meal of the day.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 2 pounds of fresh spinach, chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese
- 1 cup of ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup of melted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the chopped spinach, onion, eggs, feta cheese, and ricotta cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
- Layer 6 sheets of phyllo dough in a greased baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Spread the spinach and cheese mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Layer another 6 sheets of phyllo dough on top of the spinach mixture, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Score the top of the pie into squares or triangles with a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the pita is golden brown and crispy.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
