Seswaa Scones
Seswaa Scones are a delightful Botswana twist on the classic scone, incorporating the rich flavors of seswaa, a traditional meat dish made with beef.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup cooked seswaa, shredded
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the shredded seswaa.
- In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk and vanilla extract.
- Pour the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.
- Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick, then use a sharp knife to cut it into 8 wedges.
- Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow the scones to cool slightly before serving.
