Shaanxi Hong Shao Zhui Zhu, also known as Shaanxi Style Braised Pork Hock, is a classic dish from Shaanxi Cuisine known for its rich flavors and tender meat. This dish is perfect for a hearty meal, especially during the colder months.
Ingredients
- 4 pork hocks
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup Chinese cooking wine
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 6 slices ginger
- 4 cloves garlic, crushed
- 2 star anise
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and blanch the pork hocks for 5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pot, add soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine, sugar, ginger, garlic, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Stir to combine.
- Add the blanched pork hocks back into the pot. Pour in enough water to cover the pork hocks.
- Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 2 hours, or until the pork hocks are tender.
- Once the pork hocks are tender, uncover the pot and continue to cook until the sauce thickens.
- Serve the Shaanxi Hong Shao Zhui Zhu hot with steamed rice or noodles.
