Shami Kebab (afghan-style Beef Kebabs)
Shami Kebab is a popular Afghan dish made with ground beef, lentils, and a blend of aromatic spices. These kebabs are flavorful, tender, and perfect for serving as an appetizer or main course.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup yellow lentils, washed and drained
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- Salt to taste
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the ground beef, lentils, onion, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt.
- Add enough water to cover the mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the lentils are tender and the water has evaporated.
- Transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend until smooth. Alternatively, you can use a potato masher to mash the mixture well.
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into flat round kebabs.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat and fry the kebabs until golden brown on both sides.
- Remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
- Serve the Shami Kebabs hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
