Shami Kebab (afghan-style Beef Kebabs)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup yellow lentils, washed and drained
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the ground beef, lentils, onion, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt.
  2. Add enough water to cover the mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the lentils are tender and the water has evaporated.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend until smooth. Alternatively, you can use a potato masher to mash the mixture well.
  4. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into flat round kebabs.
  5. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat and fry the kebabs until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve the Shami Kebabs hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
