Shandong Style Braised Tofu With Vegetables

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup snow peas
  • 4 shiitake mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Sesame oil for drizzling
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess water, then cut into cubes.
  2. In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Set aside.
  3. Heat some oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until golden brown on all sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add a little more oil if needed. Sauté garlic, ginger, and green onions until fragrant.
  5. Add carrots, bell pepper, snow peas, and shiitake mushrooms. Stir-fry for a few minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender.
  6. Pour in the sauce mixture and vegetable broth. Bring to a simmer.
  7. Return the tofu to the pan and gently stir to coat with the sauce. Let it simmer for a few more minutes.
  8. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the pan, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  9. Drizzle with sesame oil and garnish with sesame seeds before serving.
