Shanghai Style Braised Tofu (上海红烧豆腐)

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add the garlic, ginger, and green onions. Sauté until fragrant.
  4. Add the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar. Stir to combine.
  5. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
  6. Return the tofu to the pan and simmer for 10 minutes.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Pour the slurry into the pan and stir until the sauce thickens.
  8. Remove from heat and serve hot.
