Shawarma (yemenite Spiced Chicken Skewers)
Shawarma is a popular Mizrahi Jewish dish featuring Yemenite spiced chicken skewers. This flavorful and aromatic dish is perfect for a family dinner or a festive gathering.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 pita bread rounds
- Sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, garlic, cumin, turmeric, coriander, cardamom, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken cubes and toss to coat. Marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- Thread the marinated chicken cubes onto skewers.
- Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken skewers for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until cooked through and slightly charred.
- Warm the pita bread rounds in the oven or on the stovetop.
- Remove the chicken from the skewers and serve with warm pita bread, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions.
