Shorbat Hareeseh (damascus-style Lamb And Chickpea Stew)
Shorbat Hareeseh is a traditional Syrian stew that combines tender lamb, hearty chickpeas, and aromatic spices. This comforting dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs lamb, cut into chunks
- 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the lamb and brown on all sides. Remove the lamb and set aside.
- Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes start to break down.
- Return the lamb to the pot and add the soaked chickpeas and broth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 2 hours, or until the lamb is tender and the chickpeas are cooked through.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve the shorbat hareeseh hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley.
