Shrimp Masala (prawn Masala)
Shrimp Masala, also known as Prawn Masala, is a flavorful and aromatic dish from South Indian cuisine. This dish is made with succulent shrimp cooked in a rich and spicy masala sauce, perfect to be enjoyed with steamed rice or naan.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green chili, slit
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 2 tbsp oil
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili. Sauté for a few minutes.
- Now, add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Stir in turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a couple of minutes.
- Add the shrimp and cook for 5-6 minutes until they turn pink and are cooked through.
- Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or naan.
