Shrimp Masala (prawn Masala)

Shrimp Masala, also known as Prawn Masala, is a flavorful and aromatic dish from South Indian cuisine. This dish is made with succulent shrimp cooked in a rich and spicy masala sauce, perfect to be enjoyed with steamed rice or naan.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili. Sauté for a few minutes.
  3. Now, add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  4. Stir in turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a couple of minutes.
  5. Add the shrimp and cook for 5-6 minutes until they turn pink and are cooked through.
  6. Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice or naan.
