Silesian Beef and Potato Casserole (Zapiekanka wołowo-ziemniaczana śląska)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef, cubed
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the beef over medium heat. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté the onion and garlic until softened.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually stir in the beef broth, and cook until the mixture thickens.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the sour cream. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by the beef, and then the remaining potatoes.
  8. Pour the sauce over the layered ingredients in the casserole dish.
  9. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  11. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
