Silesian Beef and Potato Casserole (Zapiekanka wołowo-ziemniaczana śląska)
Zapiekanka wołowo-ziemniaczana śląska, or Silesian Beef and Potato Casserole, is a traditional dish from the Silesian region of Poland. This hearty casserole is perfect for a comforting family meal, with layers of tender beef, potatoes, and a rich, flavorful sauce.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs beef, cubed
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, brown the beef over medium heat. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté the onion and garlic until softened.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually stir in the beef broth, and cook until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in the sour cream. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by the beef, and then the remaining potatoes.
- Pour the sauce over the layered ingredients in the casserole dish.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
