Sirnica (serbian Cheese Pie)
Sirnica is a traditional Serbian cheese pie that is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a snack. This flaky pastry filled with a creamy cheese mixture is a popular dish in Serbian cuisine.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1 egg
- 1 lb feta cheese, crumbled
- 1 cup cottage cheese
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup milk
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and cold butter. Use your hands to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- In a separate bowl, mix the yogurt and egg. Add this mixture to the flour and butter, and knead until a smooth dough forms. Divide the dough into two equal parts, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, mix the feta cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, sour cream, and milk until well combined.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll out one portion of the dough on a floured surface to fit the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread the cheese mixture over the dough.
- Roll out the second portion of dough and place it over the cheese mixture. Pinch the edges to seal the pie.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Allow the sirnica to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
