Slani Burek, also known as Savory Cheese Pie, is a traditional dish from Montenegrin cuisine. This delicious pie is made with layers of thin phyllo pastry filled with a savory cheese mixture, and it's perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a snack.

Slani Burek (savory Cheese Pie)

Ingredients

  • 10 sheets of phyllo pastry
  • 250g feta cheese, crumbled
  • 200g cottage cheese
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the feta cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, milk, yogurt, olive oil, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Place one sheet of phyllo pastry on a clean surface and brush it with olive oil. Repeat with 4 more sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
  4. Spread half of the cheese mixture evenly over the stacked phyllo sheets.
  5. Repeat the layering process with the remaining 5 sheets of phyllo pastry and the rest of the cheese mixture.
  6. Roll the layered phyllo and cheese into a log shape and place it in a greased baking dish.
  7. Brush the top of the pie with a little more olive oil.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the pie is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
