Slovak-style Beef Stew (Slovenský hovädzí guláš)
Slovenský hovädzí guláš, or Slovak-style beef stew, is a hearty and comforting dish that is perfect for colder weather. This traditional Slovak recipe is packed with rich flavors and tender beef, making it a favorite among locals.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 onions, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tbsp sweet paprika
- 1 tsp caraway seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, brown the beef cubes in batches over medium-high heat. Remove and set aside.
- Add the chopped onions to the pot and cook until softened. Add the minced garlic, sweet paprika, and caraway seeds, and cook for another minute.
- Return the beef to the pot and add the bay leaves and beef broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1.5 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- Add the diced potatoes to the pot and continue to simmer for another 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve the guláš hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
