Slovenian Spinach Pie (Špinačna Pita)
Špinačna Pita is a traditional Slovenian dish that features a delicious combination of spinach, eggs, and phyllo pastry. This savory pie is perfect for a hearty breakfast, brunch, or as a side dish for dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 pound fresh spinach, chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 10 sheets phyllo pastry
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the chopped spinach, onion, eggs, feta cheese, ricotta cheese, dill, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
- Layer 5 sheets of phyllo pastry in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Spread the spinach mixture over the phyllo pastry.
- Layer the remaining 5 sheets of phyllo pastry on top of the spinach mixture, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Score the top of the pie into squares or triangles using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until the phyllo pastry is golden brown and crispy.
- Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving.
