Smoky Soutzoukakia Pita (Καπνιστό πίτα σουτζουκάκια)

Smoky Soutzoukakia Pita (Καπνιστό πίτα σουτζουκάκια)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 4 pita breads
  • 1 cup tzatziki sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, minced garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into small meatballs.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, red wine vinegar, and honey. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer for an additional 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Warm the pita breads and spread a spoonful of tzatziki sauce on each one. Place the meatballs and sauce inside the pita breads.
  6. Serve the smoky soutzoukakia pita with extra tzatziki sauce on the side.
