Smoky Soutzoukakia Pita (Καπνιστό πίτα σουτζουκάκια)
This smoky soutzoukakia pita is a delicious and flavorful dish from Komi cuisine. Soutzoukakia are Greek meatballs flavored with cumin and garlic, and in this recipe, they are wrapped in a warm pita with a smoky tomato sauce and creamy tzatziki.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 onion, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, minced garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into small meatballs.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, red wine vinegar, and honey. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer for an additional 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
- Warm the pita breads and spread a spoonful of tzatziki sauce on each one. Place the meatballs and sauce inside the pita breads.
- Serve the smoky soutzoukakia pita with extra tzatziki sauce on the side.
