Sorrel Leaves Lamb Curry (gongura Mamsam)

Ingredients

  • 500g lamb, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups sorrel leaves (gongura), washed and chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and sauté the chopped onions until golden brown.
  2. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes.
  3. Add the lamb pieces and cook until they are browned on all sides.
  4. Stir in the tomato puree, red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped sorrel leaves and cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Pour in the water, cover the pan, and simmer for 45 minutes or until the lamb is tender.
  7. Sprinkle garam masala and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  8. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
