Ingredients

  • 4 cups sorrel sepals
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 cup rum (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the sorrel sepals, water, sugar, cinnamon stick, ginger, and cloves.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and let the sorrel mixture cool to room temperature.
  4. Strain the liquid into a pitcher and discard the sorrel sepals and spices.
  5. Stir in the rum, if using.
  6. Refrigerate the sorrel sensation until chilled, then serve over ice.
