Southern Lasagna
Southern lasagna is a delicious twist on the classic Italian dish, incorporating flavors and ingredients commonly found in Southern cuisine.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 12 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread 1 cup of the meat sauce. Arrange 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta cheese over the noodles, then sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers twice.
- Top with remaining meat sauce and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Let stand for 15 minutes before cutting and serving.
