Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, grated onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, parsley, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and pepper. Shape the mixture into small meatballs.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, red wine, water, tomato paste, and sugar. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  4. Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve the soutzoukakia hot, with your choice of side dishes.
