Spanakopita is a traditional Tatar cuisine dish that consists of a creamy spinach and cheese filling wrapped in layers of flaky phyllo pastry. This savory pie is a popular appetizer or main course and is perfect for gatherings and special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1 pound fresh spinach, chopped
- 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh dill
- 1/2 cup chopped green onions
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 12 sheets phyllo pastry
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the chopped spinach, feta cheese, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, dill, green onions, eggs, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix well.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Place one sheet of phyllo pastry in the prepared baking dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat with 5 more sheets, brushing each sheet with butter.
- Spoon the spinach and cheese mixture over the phyllo layers and spread it out evenly.
- Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top of the spinach mixture, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Score the top layer of phyllo into squares or diamonds using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the phyllo is golden brown and crispy.
- Allow the spanakopita to cool for a few minutes before cutting into portions and serving.
