Ingredients

  • 1 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
  • 6-8 dried red chilies
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Heat a pan over medium heat and dry roast the split pigeon peas until they turn golden brown and aromatic. Remove from the pan and set aside to cool.
  2. In the same pan, dry roast the dried red chilies, sesame seeds, and cumin seeds until the sesame seeds start to pop. Remove from the pan and let it cool.
  3. Once cooled, transfer the roasted lentils, red chilies, sesame seeds, and cumin seeds to a food processor or blender. Add the asafoetida and salt. Grind into a coarse powder.
  4. Heat the oil in a small pan and pour it over the ground powder. Mix well to combine.
  5. Allow the spiced lentil powder to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container.
