Spiced Meatballs in Tomato Sauce (Sulu Köfte)

Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup rice
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, rice, cumin, paprika, black pepper, and salt until well combined. Shape the mixture into small meatballs.
  2. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides.
  3. Pour in the beef or vegetable broth, diced tomatoes, and tomato paste. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the rice is tender.
  4. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed. Serve the Sulu Köfte hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley.
