Spiced Tomato Soup (tangy Hyderabadi Tomato Rasam)

Ingredients

  • 4 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 4 cups water
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pot and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  2. Add the chopped onions, garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Cook until the tomatoes turn soft.
  4. Add tamarind paste and salt. Mix well.
  5. Pour in the water and bring the soup to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
