Spiced Tomato Soup (udupi Style Rasam)

Ingredients

  • 4 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon tamarind paste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the chopped tomatoes, onion, garlic, ginger, green chili, cumin seeds, black pepper, turmeric powder, tamarind paste, and water.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Add salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro.
  4. Serve hot as a soup or with steamed rice.
