Spicy Chettinad Chicken Curry

Ingredients

  • 1 kg chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat sesame oil in a pan and add cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, fennel seeds, and cumin seeds. Sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Now, add the chicken pieces and cook until they are no longer pink.
  4. Stir in the tomato puree, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 10 minutes.
  5. Add grated coconut and curry leaves. Cook for another 10 minutes until the chicken is tender and the curry thickens.
  6. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or naan.
