Spicy Chickpea Curry (bhojpuri Ghugni)
Spicy Chickpea Curry, also known as Bhojpuri Ghugni, is a popular dish from the Bhojpuri cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with tender chickpeas and a blend of traditional Indian spices, creating a hearty and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 3-4 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 teaspoons coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and cook for 2 minutes.
- Add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Add the soaked chickpeas and garam masala. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes.
- Pour in enough water to cover the chickpeas, cover the pot, and simmer for 30-35 minutes or until the chickpeas are tender.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
