Spicy Prawn Biryani

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 cup chopped mint leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon biryani masala
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat ghee in a large pot and sauté the sliced onions until golden brown.
  3. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  5. Add the prawns, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and biryani masala. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Layer the soaked rice over the prawn mixture in the pot.
  7. Whisk the yogurt with water and pour it over the rice. Sprinkle chopped cilantro and mint leaves.
  8. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and cook on low heat for 20 minutes.
  9. Once the rice is cooked, gently fluff it with a fork and serve hot.
