Spicy Rice Vermicelli (mee Siam)
Spicy Rice Vermicelli, also known as Mee Siam, is a popular Malay dish that features thin rice noodles in a flavorful and spicy gravy. This dish is a perfect combination of tangy, sweet, and spicy flavors, making it a favorite among many.
Ingredients
- 200g rice vermicelli
- 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 200g firm tofu, cut into cubes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red chili, sliced
- 1 tablespoon dried shrimp, soaked and drained (optional)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup bean sprouts
- 2 hard-boiled eggs, halved
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
Instructions
- Soak the rice vermicelli in hot water for 5 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a small bowl, mix the tamarind paste with 1/2 cup of water, then strain the mixture to extract the tamarind juice.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the tofu and fry until golden brown. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the chopped onion, garlic, red chili, and dried shrimp (if using). Cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Pour in the tamarind juice, soy sauce, and sugar. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
- Add the bean sprouts and fried tofu to the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the bean sprouts are slightly wilted.
- Divide the soaked rice vermicelli among serving plates. Ladle the spicy gravy over the noodles.
- Garnish with hard-boiled eggs and lime wedges. Serve hot and enjoy!
