Spicy Sardine Curry (mathi Mulakittathu)
Spicy Sardine Curry, also known as Mathi Mulakittathu, is a popular dish from the Kerala Cuisine. This fiery and flavorful curry is made with sardines and a blend of aromatic spices, perfect for a hearty meal.
Ingredients
- 500g sardines, cleaned and gutted
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tomatoes, chopped
- 4 green chilies, slit
- 1 inch ginger, julienned
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp red chili powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
Instructions
- Heat coconut oil in a pan and add fenugreek seeds. Once they splutter, add onions, green chilies, ginger, garlic, and curry leaves. Sauté until onions turn golden brown.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Sauté for a minute.
- Add tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add coconut milk and bring the curry to a gentle simmer.
- Gently add the cleaned sardines to the curry and cook for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
- Adjust salt and spice levels according to taste.
