Ingredients

  • Shortcrust pastry
  • 6 whole mackerel, cleaned and filleted
  • 6 hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • Butter
  • Flour
  • Milk
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry and line a pie dish.
  3. Arrange the mackerel fillets and hard-boiled eggs in the pie dish.
  4. Sauté the chopped onion in butter until soft, then sprinkle with flour and gradually stir in milk to make a thick sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the sauce over the fish and eggs.
  6. Roll out the remaining pastry to make a lid for the pie, then place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal.
  7. Make a few slits in the pastry to allow steam to escape.
  8. Bake for 1 hour or until the pastry is golden and the fish is cooked through.
