Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 1 pound BBQ pork, diced
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water. Let it stand for about 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the yeast mixture and 1/4 cup of water. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the BBQ pork filling by combining the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and five-spice powder in a bowl. Add the diced BBQ pork and marinate for 30 minutes.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 pieces. Flatten each piece into a circle and place a spoonful of the BBQ pork filling in the center. Gather the edges and pinch to seal, then place each bun on a square of parchment paper.
- Place the buns in a steamer, cover, and let them rise for another 15 minutes. Steam the buns for 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through.
- Serve the steamed buns hot and enjoy!
