Steamed Dumplings (siomai)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/4 lb shrimp, chopped
  • 1/2 cup water chestnuts, chopped
  • 1/4 cup green onions, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 24 pieces siomai or wonton wrappers

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped shrimp, water chestnuts, green onions, egg, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Place a siomai wrapper on a flat surface. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the pork mixture onto the center of the wrapper.
  3. Gather the edges of the wrapper and gently pleat around the filling, leaving the top open. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  4. Arrange the siomai in a single layer in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper or cabbage leaves.
  5. Steam the siomai over boiling water for 15-20 minutes or until cooked through.
  6. Serve the steamed dumplings hot with a dipping sauce of your choice.
