Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice (荷叶饭)
荷叶饭 (Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice) is a traditional dish from Hubei Cuisine, known for its aromatic and flavorful combination of sticky rice, savory fillings, and the unique fragrance of lotus leaves.
Ingredients
- 2 cups glutinous rice
- 200g pork belly, diced
- 4 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and diced
- 1 Chinese sausage, sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 4 lotus leaves, soaked and cleaned
- 4 slices of salted egg yolk
Instructions
- Wash the glutinous rice and soak it in water for 2 hours.
- Marinate the pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, and Chinese sausage with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and white pepper for 30 minutes.
- Cut the lotus leaves into square pieces and blanch them in boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Divide the glutinous rice and marinated ingredients into 4 portions.
- Place a piece of lotus leaf on a flat surface, then a slice of salted egg yolk, and a portion of glutinous rice mixture on top.
- Wrap the lotus leaf to form a tight package and secure with kitchen twine.
- Steam the wrapped lotus leaf rice for 1 hour.
- Unwrap and serve hot.
