Stew Pie (karta Boregi)
Stew Pie (Karta Boregi) is a traditional dish from Kazakh Cuisine that combines the heartiness of a stew with the flakiness of a pie crust. This savory pie is perfect for a comforting family meal or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 1 lb stew meat, cubed
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 potatoes, diced
- 1/2 cup peas
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 1/2 cup melted butter
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until translucent.
- Add the stew meat to the pot and cook until browned on all sides.
- Stir in the carrots, potatoes, peas, tomato paste, salt, black pepper, paprika, and water. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the meat is tender.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Layer 4 sheets of phyllo dough in a greased baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Pour the stew mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Layer another 4 sheets of phyllo dough on top of the stew, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the phyllo dough is golden brown and crispy.
- Let the stew pie cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
