Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Plnené kapustové rolky)
Plnené kapustové rolky, or Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, are a traditional Slovak dish that is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for a comforting meal. These rolls are filled with a savory mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, then wrapped in tender cabbage leaves and simmered in a rich tomato sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes until they are pliable. Remove and set aside to cool.
- In a bowl, mix together the ground pork, cooked rice, onion, garlic, paprika, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
- In a large pot, combine the tomato sauce and broth. Place the cabbage rolls in the pot, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
- Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot, spooning some of the tomato sauce over the top.
