Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (sarmale)
Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, known as Sarmale, are a traditional Moldovan dish made with cabbage leaves stuffed with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices. This dish is a staple at family gatherings and special occasions, and it's sure to impress with its delicious taste and comforting aroma.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup chicken broth
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.
- In a bowl, mix together the ground pork, rice, onion, garlic, tomato sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll them up, tucking in the sides as you go.
- Place the cabbage rolls in a large pot, seam side down. Pour the chicken broth over the rolls and bring to a simmer.
- Cover and cook for 1.5-2 hours, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot, with a dollop of sour cream on top if desired.
