Sarma me Gjethë Dardhe, or Stuffed Grape Leaves, is a traditional dish from Kosovan cuisine. These flavorful stuffed grape leaves are a popular appetizer or main dish, perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Stuffed Grape Leaves (Sarma me Gjethë Dardhe)

Ingredients

  • 1 jar grape leaves, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 lemon, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together the rice, chopped onion, dill, olive oil, tomato paste, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Place a grape leaf on a flat surface, shiny side down. Place a small amount of the rice mixture in the center of the leaf.
  3. Fold the bottom of the leaf over the filling, then fold in the sides, and roll up tightly.
  4. Repeat with the remaining grape leaves and rice mixture.
  5. Place the stuffed grape leaves in a large pot, seam side down, and layer them tightly in the pot.
  6. Place the sliced lemon over the grape leaves and add enough water to cover them.
  7. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat for 1 hour.
  8. Once cooked, remove from heat and let the grape leaves cool in the pot before serving.
